Skills and custom commands

A skill is a packaged set of instructions for a recurring kind of work — a house style, a review checklist, a deployment runbook. A custom command is a prompt template you keep as a Markdown file.

Skills

Vector finds a skill as a SKILL.md (or <name>.md) in a skill folder, in the repository or global, and the agent calls it by name from the list of available skills.

Downloaded skills are cached under a versioned directory, so updating one is clean rather than a manual copy. Skills are a Vector mechanism, not an MCP server.

Custom commands

Your own commands are Markdown files in a command/ or commands/ folder, in the repository or in your global config. Frontmatter carries the metadata, the body is the prompt template, and the file's path becomes the name — so command/review/api.md is available as review/api.
